Olivia Newton-John’s enduring image may be one of permed hair, bare shoulders, and black spandex on the set of “Grease”. The late actress and singer, who died Monday at the age of 73, was a fashion icon long before and after her blockbuster roles.

In the 1970s, Newton-John became a symbol of the decade’s anything-goes fashion. With her shimmering bodysuits and evening gowns as well as bell-bottoms and miniskirts, she put a glamorous spin on the bohemian aesthetic.

She embodied the 1950s leather-clad era onscreen, but her off-screen style was a throwback to the ’80s. With her memorable music video for 1981’s “Physical,” she also helped establish the era’s activewear trend (and cemented headbands as one of its hottest accessories).
